Calvin Coolidge Belton

Mr. Calvin Coolidge Belton, 83, of 912 Andover Street, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Belton was born November 13, 1924, in Surry County, to the late Rufus and Mallie Newman Belton. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during World War II, was the manager of Sears for many years, and retired from Heilig-Meyers Furniture. Mr. Belton was past president of the Mount Airy Lions Club and a member of Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM. He was a charter member of the Mount Airy Jaycees and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, where he was a member of the E.G. Wynne Sunday School Class. Surviving are his wife, Claudine Speight Belton of the home; a daughter, Lisa Belton of North Wilkesboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Joellen Belton of Pinnacle; two grandchildren and spouses, Merry Craig and Jay Boaz of Pilot Mountain and Joey and Sara Beth Belton of Nags Head; three great-grandchildren, Jefferson Boaz, Folger Boaz, and Merry Parker Boaz; a special friend, Pam McHone of North Wilkesboro; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rocelle and Tom Hart of Mount Airy, Sylvia Hunsucker of Rural Hall, and George Speight, Sr. and Maude Speight of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Belton was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez Grier and Louise Sexton; a brother, Frank Belton; and a brother-in-law, Wesley Hunsucker. A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 15, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Oakdale Cemetery, with Dr. Roger B. Gilbert officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home; however, the family can be contacted at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
