Mr. Calvin Cooledge Gilley, 87, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday evening, September 14, 2012, at Golden Living Center. Mr. Gilley was born June 3, 1925, in Surry County, one of eight children born to the late Edgar and Octavia Harris Gilley. Calvin retired as a knitter from Spencer's Inc. after many years of service. He cherished all his friends, neighbors, and family, especially the love of his life, Isaac Ring, Caroline Williams, and Carter McPeak. He is survived by his wife, Allene Williams Gilley of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Tilley of Kernersville, Regina and Donnie Waller of Salisbury, and Jennifer Lynn Sumner of Mount Airy; a stepdaughter and her husband, Gina and Gene Vogler of Mount Airy; a stepson, Randy Jackson of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Inez and Grady Simmons of Jonesville, Mildred and John George of Kernersville, Peggy and Dennis Ward of Cary, and Nell Hunter of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gilley was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Johnson Gilley; a sister, Helen Collins; and two brothers, Johnny Gilley and Wade Gilley. A graveside service will be held Monday, September 17, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Craig Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 9:30 until 10:30 AM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Golden Living Center, the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, and the staff of Northern Hospital of Surry County for the loving and compassionate care they provided. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
