Captain, USMC, Retired Floyd LaVerne Morris

“What a blessing, privilege and honor to have had this incredible man in our lives.” Captain, USMC, Retired Floyd LaVerne Morris, 95, of Lowgap, passed away at his home on Sunday, December 11, 2016. He was born in Hettinger County, ND on October 19, 1921 to the late George and Irma Claflin Morris. He bravely served in the U.S. Marines for 21 years, serving both in World War II and in Korea. After retiring from the military, Mr. Morris started working with McLean Trucking and retired after 20 years as Vice President of Maintenance. He was a 50 year member of Semper Fidelis Masonic Lodge #680 in Jacksonville, NC, and a 32 degree Scottish Rites Mason. Mr. Morris is survived by his loving wife Ramona Gaye Moore Morris; a daughter and son-in-law, Mindy and Chris Large; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Ellen Morris; grandchildren, Benjamin Large, Wesley Large, Debbie McClain, Michelle Danz, Penny Kiser, Rose Wimberly and Loria Carter; many great and great-great grandchildren; a sister, June Brooks and a brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Dolores Morris; a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sherry and Dennis Lowe. In addition to his parents, Mr. Morris was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Gay and Jimmy Spooner; a son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Marie Morris; a sister, Stella Lakey; brothers, Elsworth, Wayne, Milo, and Glen Morris. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ewell Vernon and Rev. Clyde Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Tuesday from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.
