Mr. Carroll Fleming Chauncey, 95, of 249 Fairview Avenue, Mount Airy, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 29, 2011, at Golden Living Center. Mr. Chauncey was born July 29, 1916, in Pitt County, one of five children born to the late William C. and Anna Fleming Chauncey. Carroll served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as an assistant manager at JCPenney for many years and later retired from F. Rees Company. Mr. Chauncey was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church, Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM, and a Shriner. Carroll was a founding member and former president of White Pines Country Club. He served on a board of directors with the United Methodist Church when Central United Methodist Church relocated from its location on Franklin Street to its present location on North Main Street. Mr. Chauncey also served as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels for many decades in Mount Airy. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Frieda Hardy Hughes Chauncey of the home; a stepdaughter and her husband, Kim and Mike Branch of Dobson; a granddaughter, Mariah Branch of Dobson; and several nieces and nephews, Paula Chauncey Rigler of Decatur, AL, Carole Chauncey Forwood of Nottingham, MD, Mac Chauncey of Grifton, Gibb Chauncey of Washington, and Linda Chauncey Baldree of Bath. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chauncey was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Ruth Miller Chauncey; and four brothers, James Chauncey, Paul Chauncey, Julius Chauncey, and Tillman Chauncey. The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Glenda Bramlet and Dr. Steve Lindsley officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard and Masonic rites by Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in floral tribute or to a charity of the donor's choice.
