Carylon Billings Dockery, 84, of Greensboro, passed away Monday, January 24, 2011, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born August 20, 1926, in Grayson County, VA, to the late Roscoe Lake and Cora Wagoner Billings. In addition to her parents, Carylon was preceded in death by a brother, Roscoe Billings; and a sister, Joyce Welch. She is survived by her husband, Luther Sam Dockery, Jr. of the home; their children, Sam III and Cynthia Dockery of MS, Cary and George McGregor of NC, Celeste and Taber Chadwick III of FL, and Dr. Stephen and Marci Dockery of AL. Carylon was the loving grandmother of Elizabeth Etta Dockery, Gorden Lake McGregor, Lauren McGregor, Sarah McGregor, Taber Chadwick IV, and Kelly A. Whiteheart and her son, Graham. She is survived by a sister, Victoria Maxwell; and three brothers, Horace, Gayle, and Harold Billings, all of NC. Carylon graduated two years early from Piney Creek School as their valedictorian; received her B.S. from Salem College and earned master degrees from Duke University in both zoology and physics. Additionally, she received a doctorial scholarship from Yale University, where she studied solid state and nuclear Physics. She devoted her life to educating others, working as a science teacher at High Point Central High School and a professor at multiple colleges throughout the Triad area.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011, at 11:00 AM in the Dockery Family Cemetery. There will be no other services held at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to hospicecarecenter.org. Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson is serving the Dockery family.
