Mr. C.B. Roberson, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born December 28, 1924, in Stuart, VA, to the late Greeley Hampton and Mae Vaughn Roberson. Mr. Roberson was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a graduate of Stuart High School and had served our country in the United States Navy during World War II at Alameda Naval Station in Oakland, CA. Mr. Roberson was a member of Rockford Street Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities through the years as a lay leader, chairman of the Board of Trustees, administrative council, Sunday school superintendent, finance committee, pastor parish relations, and treasurer. He always enjoyed cooking for the Methodist men and other church meals. He was a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM and was a York Rite 32nd degree mason. He was also dedicated to the community involvement, which included the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce. He was the first and only member to serve two terms as its president and twice selected the organization's "Citizen of the Year." Mr. Roberson was a longtime member of the Mount Airy Rotary Club, having a perfect attendance record of 55 years. He had the honor of being named the local chapter's first "Paul Harris Fellow" in 1977, which was the highest honor bestowed upon a Rotary member. He also served as secretary-treasurer for the Rotary for 25 years. He was retired from C.B. Roberson Oil Company Gulf Distributer in 1981 and Petroleum Transport in 1991. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Jamie Hatcher Roberson of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Jane and Bruce Burnette of Mooresville; two granddaughters, Amy Katherine Burnette of Boone and Sarah Elizabeth Burnette of Mooresville; three sisters, Alese Roberson Hill of Johnson City, TN, Betty Mae Roberson West and husband, Jim, of Stuart, VA, JoAnn Roberson Wood and husband, Walter, of Martinsville, VA; a sister-in-law, Rachel Hatcher Jones of Dobson; three nephews, Lee Hill of Bluff City, TN, Bobby West of Williamsburg, VA, and Jerry Wood of Martinsville, VA; two nieces, Donna Stoessner of Kitty Hawk and Debbie Wood McClur of Wilmington, DE; four great nephews, Chris Stoessner, Matthew Stoessner, Nicholas Hill, and C.L. Hill; and a great niece, Riley Wood. In addition to his parents, Mr. Roberson was preceded in death by three brothers, Riley Roberson, Bennie Roberson, and Elmer Roberson; and a brother-in-law, Carl Lee Hill. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Rockford Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harr Sherrill and the Rev. William Randolph officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
