Mr. Charles Edward Akers, 77, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday morning, January 18, 2021, at PruittHealth in High Point.  Mr. Akers was born July 16, 1943, in Surry County, the oldest of five children born to the late Charlie Lawrence and Nora Jane Jenkins Akers.  Charles proudly served our country in the Army National Guard for several years.  He worked in several hosiery mills throughout his life, and he retired from Mauney Hosiery in Kings Mountain.  Charles was a Christian and a faithful member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Patsy Turpin Bryant Akers of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Billy McRorie of Monroe; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Rhonda Akers of Bessemer City; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Freeman of Mount Airy; a stepson and his wife, Bobby Ray Bryant, Jr. and Charlotte Bryant; five stepgrandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bill Norris of Raleigh; a brother, Jim Akers of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Akers was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Freida Sue Melton Akers; and two brothers, Gary Akers and Larry Akers.  A service of worship and celebration of Charles’ life will be held Thursday, January 21, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. Chris Benfield officiating.  Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the church.  Due to public health concerns, attendees are required to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
