Charles Oscar Gunter

Mr. Charles Oscar Gunter, 65, of 169 Island Stream Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Gunter was born February 3, 1943, in Surry County, to the late Victor Oscar and Alice Long Gunter. He was a disabled veteran, having served during the Vietnam War, and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. Mr. Gunter was retired from the City of Mount Airy, a member of the American Legion Post 123, and a member of the Baptist faith. Surviving are four daughters, Allison Gunter of the home, Susan Gunter and Melissa Gunter, both of Thomasville, and Cheryl Gunter, Lake Norman; three sons, Brandon Gunter of Ararat, VA, and Brian Gunter and Keith Gunter, both of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Rebecca and Murel Atkins and Opal and Dennis Draughn, all of Mount Airy, and Linda Coe of Dobson. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Ricky Atkins and the Rev. Arlis Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by the American Legion Post 123. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
