Mr. Charlie Gene Moncus, 83, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday morning, January 22, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Moncus was born April 30, 1940, in Surry County, the son of the late John Luther and Myrtle Mae Hall Moncus. Charlie grew up in the Franklin community and attended Franklin School. He worked as a funeral assistant at Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy, retiring in 2001 with more than 30 years of service. In his 25-plus years of Masonic service with Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF and AM, Brother Moncus exemplified the principles of Freemasonry: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Charlie’s commitment to the lodge was unparalleled and his contributions have had a lasting impact on both the Masonic community and the world at large. Brother Moncus was also a Shriner, further deepening his understanding and application of Masonic teachings. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Helena Creed Moncus; a stepdaughter, Sonya Niston and her husband, Steve, of Mount Airy; a stepgranddaughter, Whitney Venable and her husband, Zack, of Mount Airy; a great-stepgranddaughter, Everly Venable of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Annie Mae Scott of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Moncus was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Mae Hawks Moncus; three sisters, Mary Edith Moncus, Cleo Richardson, and Rosa Lee Goins; three brothers, Curtis Moncus, Robert Moncus, and Marvin Moncus; and a special nephew, Robert Harold “Monk” Moncus. A Masonic graveside service will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens, under the direction of Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF and AM. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:00 until 1:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
