Mr. Charlie George Shelton, 74, of 205 Cotswold Lane, King, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Shelton was born September 25, 1932, in Surry County, to the late John Quincy Shelton, Sr. and Maude Frances Goad Shelton. He proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Charlie retired as safety director from Vulcan Materials Company after 37 years of service. Following his retirement, Shelton volunteered on Tuesday mornings at the Veterans Administration Clinic in Winston-Salem. Charlie was a faithful member of Pfafftown Baptist Church for 22 years. He moved his membership to First Baptist Church in King in 2005. Mr. Shelton, also known as "Charlie G." was a faithful, loyal, and caring servant to the town of Rural Hall. He served as a Rural Hall Sanitary District member from 1964 to 1974 and, when the town of Rural Hall incorporated, he served on the town council from 1974 to 2001. During his tenure on the town council, he served as mayor, mayor pro-tem, and councilman. Charlie G.'s love and compassion for his fellow man was always felt at the staff level, among the council, and by the citizens of Rural Hall. His experience as a seasoned, elected official was gratifying and known throughout the community. In every decision, Charlie G. always tried to do what was best for the community. The town of Rural Hall's elected officials, staff, and community were fortunate to have the opportunity to be served and represented by Charlie G. Shelton, a man with family values, love, and integrity. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Nichols Shelton of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and John Moore of Lake Norman and Molly and Kenny Clark of Advance; two grandchildren, Zoe Clark and Luke Clark, both of Advance; two stepgrandchildren, Wes Moore of Lake Norman and Brad Moore of Washington, DC; a sister, Mattie Flippin of Greensboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Lisa Shelton of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by two brothers, Grady Monroe Shelton and John Quincy "J.Q." Shelton, Jr. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Jo Bjorling and the Rev. Rich Lowder. Burial will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens, with military rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, Inc., 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County (Stokes County division) and the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their loving care and support during Charlie's illness.
