Charlie James "Fos" Turman, Sr.

Charlie James “Fos” Turman, 94, of Laurel Fork, VA, passed away on February 14, 2025. Born in Dugspur, VA on March 15, 1930, Fos was a beloved husband of 63 years, a father, grandfather, and a man of faith. He was a faithful member of Tory Creek Baptist Church and missed attending after his health declined. Though his early years included playing music, it was his love for dirt track racing that defined him. Fos’s life was a testament to his deep love for family and the thrill of the track. His greatest passion was dirt track racing, where the roar of engines and the thrill of the race filled his soul. He spent countless hours at Wythe Raceway where he called their races for more than 30 years. He never failed to begin a race with the Racer’s Prayer. To all who knew him, the sound of racing engines will forever serve as a reminder of Fos and the joy it brought him.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Joe and Pearlie Turman, loving in-laws Arlie and Josie Belcher, several siblings, and a son and daughter, Joe Quesenberry and Debbie Quesenberry. He was the last remaining of his siblings.

Fos leaves behind his adoring wife, Sylvia of the home, children Mike (Carolyn) of Fredericksburg, VA, Jake (Pam) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Gary (Linda) of Laurel Fork, VA, Terry (Sheila) of Laurel Fork, VA, Pat (Becky) of Radford, VA, Matt (Michelle) of Laurel Fork, VA and Jim (Jennifer) of Hillsville, VA. Fos had 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren. Fos was known far and wide for his humor and tall tales. He was the author of the column “The Outlaw Jaw” in the Carroll News for many years. In his last days he found the most comfort and joy in his family and watching his great grandbabies sing and dance to entertain him.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. at Tory Creek Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan with Reverend Lonnie Hylton officiating. Visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment will follow at Mountain View United Church Cemetery in Meadows of Dan.

Fos will be deeply missed, but the roar of the engines will continue to remind us of the man who loved them so much.
