Mrs. Christine Hinkley Nelson, 74, of Cana, VA, passed away early Monday morning, March 24, 2014, at her home. Mrs. Nelson was born August 21, 1939, in Montgomery County, VA, the daughter of the late Doc Kent and Willie Mae Newby Hinkley. Christine retired from Pine State Knitwear and was a member of Mount Airy Church of God. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Betty Ball of Lebanon, VA, Deborah and John Shortridge of Pounding Mill, VA, Dot and Wayne Worrell of Winston-Salem, and Connie and D.A. Strickland of Cana, VA; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha and Frank Lyles of Mechanicsville, VA, and Naomi and Renee Scallon of Warsaw; a brother and sister-in-law, Sonny and Betty Hinkley of Saginaw, TX; several nieces and nephews; her special buddy, Snowball; and her two cats, Penny and Imposter. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, the Rev. James Howard Nelson; two granddaughters, Christy Chappell and Janet Qualls; four great-grandchildren, Jarred Ball, Mikey Dupree, Branden John Shortridge, and Shea Ashburn; and two sisters, Barbara Bell and Frances Shark. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Charles Powers and the Rev. Robbie Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
