Mr. Clarence Lee Huffman, 86, of Mount Airy, died Monday, March 23, 2015. Mr. Huffman was born July 2, 1928, in Wilkes County, the oldest of seven children born to the late Daniel Franklin and Callie Virginia Haymore Huffman. Clarence graduated from White Plains School and later attended Draughn's Business College in Winston-Salem. He proudly served our country as a seaman first class in the United States Navy, stationed in Hawaii aboard the USS Razorback Submarine, following World War II. Clarence worked as a truck driver for many years with Hennis Freight Lines, later known as Spector Freight Lines. Following his retirement from A.C. Nielson Inc., he was an employee of the County of Surry. Clarence was a longtime member of Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF and AM and a dedicated supporter of the Mount Airy Public Library. In his later years, Mr. Huffman became a member of The United States Submarine Veterans organization. Clarence was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church until his health declined. Throughout the years, he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and a member of various committees, including the Building Committee, Cemetery Committee, Transition Committee, and Pastor Search Committee. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Leona Badgett Huffman of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Huffman and Jeffrey Whitsett of Mount Airy; a sister, Alene Bowman of Mount Airy; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dr. Gilbert and Mellie Huffman of Mount Airy, Clate Huffman of Winston-Salem, and Ralph and Peggy Huffman of Whiteville; and many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Huffman was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers-in-law, Coleen and E. Gray Dollyhigh and John Bowman; and a brother and sister-in-law, Donald Rex Huffman and Nell Huffman Martin. A service of worship and a celebration of Clarence's life will be held Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at 3:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. and the Rev. Kermit L. Gray officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church. There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home; however, his body will remain at Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy on Tuesday afternoon for his family and friends to honor his memory. In lieu of food and flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Piney Grove Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1022, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
