Mr. Clarence Wayne Jarrell, 83, of 109 Lawrelyn Drive, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 6, 2011, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Jarrell was born February 8, 1927, in Surry County, son of the late Thomas Jefferson "Tommy" and Nina Frances Lowe Jarrell. Wayne served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He began working at Jarrell's General Store at the age of 13, and he worked there for 50 years. Mr. Jarrell was a faithful member of Franklin Heights United Methodist Church, greeting everyone at the door with his big smile and firm handshake. Wayne loved his family, his father's old-time music, calling square dances, and going to his grandson's ballgames. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Norma Hill Jarrell of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Wayne and Sherry Hudson Jarrell of Mount Airy; a grandson, Logan McKenzie Jarrell of Boone; a sister, Ardena Jarrell Moncus of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Doris Mills of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; and special cousins, Norris and Faye Jarrell and Kester and Rachael Jarrell, all of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jarrell was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin Franklin "B.F." Jarrell; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Tunk Sutphin; and three brothers-in-law, Curtis Moncus, Morris Hill, and Ed Mills. The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 9, 2011, at 3:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Richard Buffkin and the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Franklin Heights United Methodist Church, 416 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
