Mrs. Clarice Essie Sutphin Hall, 87, of 127 Alton Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, after battling Alzheimer's for 14 years. Mrs. Hall was born May 22, 1922, in Surry County, to the late George Lee and Sarah Elsie Hicks Sutphin. She retired from the Surry County School System as a substitute teacher and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, William Green Hall, Sr. of the home; a daughter, Dolores Hall Taylor of Elkin; a son, Bill Hall, Jr. of Mount Airy; two grandchildren, Shawnda Taylor Miller of Elkin and Charles Ted "Chuck" Taylor, II and his wife, Allison, of Mount Airy; five great-grandchildren, Vaughn Hagen Miller, Elizabeth Paige Miller, Andrew Franklin Miller, Olivia Grace Taylor, and Emory Faith Taylor; three sisters, Lois Short, Betty Key, and Savannah Midkiff, all of Mount Airy; a brother, Joe Dean Sutphin of Winston-Salem; and a special friend, Chris Childress. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by three sisters, Frances McCadams, Maggie Hiatt, and Bessie Short; and four brothers, Johnnie Sutphin, Jack Sutphin, Abb Sutphin, and Don Sutphin. The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 4:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Todd E. Byrd officiating. Entombment will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Brad Goad, Hospice Nurse Penny Culler, Hospice CNAs Pat Sawyers and Sheila Craddock, and to the staff at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center and Central Continuing Care for their love and care given to Clarice during her illness.
