Mr. Clay Eric Edwards, 52, of 847 Old Lowgap Road, Mount Airy, passed from this life to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday afternoon, July 20, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Edwards was born March 13, 1961, in Surry County, the son of the late Jesse James and Viola McBride Edwards. Clay lost the love of his life, Emma Elizabeth "Libby" Gates Edwards, his beloved wife, on Monday, July 1, 2013. Clay worked at Bassett Furniture Company for many years and later worked at North Carolina Granite Corporation. He was a member of Holy Cross Baptist Church. Left to cherish his memory are a daughter, Michelle Edwards of Lexington; a stepdaughter and her husband, Angie and Brad Hull of Mount Airy; a stepson and his wife, Roy Lee Senter, Jr. and Shelley Senter of Mount Airy; seven grandchildren, Jessica Edwards, Brittany Brady, James Turney, Zachary Senter, Jacob Senter, Dustin Senter, and Samantha Senter; four great-grandchildren, Audree Edwards, Nahla Hayden, Eli Hayden, and Grayson Senter; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Shelby and Jimmie Bobbitt and Patsy and the Rev. James Odum, all of Mount Airy, and Emma Jean and Jody Hutchens of King; four brothers and five sisters-in-law, Floyd and Billie Jo Edwards, Cecil Edwards and Bonnie, Brent Edwards and June, Ivan and Gena Edwards, and Linda Edwards, all of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Sandra and the Rev. Butch Holder of Mount Airy and Dennis Gates and his special friend, Phyllis Scales, of Ararat, VA; a special niece, Amanda Leftwich, who shared the same birthdate as Clay; many other nieces and nephews; and two special aunts, Betty Scott and Gloria Snow. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Jess Edwards and Raleigh James Edwards; two brothers-in-law, Robert Mcree Gates and George William Gates; a niece, Blake McKenzie Edwards; and three nephews, Harvey Lee Edwards, Bobby Ray Felts, and Dale McCormick. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Holy Cross Baptist Church, with the Rev. Butch Holder and the Rev. James Odum officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Holy Cross Baptist Church, and other times at the home of Angie and Brad Hull, 116 Hully Farm Lane, Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Baptist Church, 344 York Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017, in memory of Emma Elizabeth "Libby" Gates Edwards.
