Mr. Clay Lance Smith, 70, of Denton, formerly of Ararat, VA, passed away Tuesday morning, July 5, 2011, at the Henryetta and Bruce Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. Mr. Smith was born September 6, 1940, in Patrick County, VA, the son of the late John Moir and Annie Ruth Culler Smith. Lance served in the United States Army from 1963 until 1965. He worked as a mechanic and truck driver for Burlington Industries and Thomas Built Buses for many years. He is survived by a son, Terry Lance Smith of Thomasville; a sister, Janet Burns of High Point; two brothers and sisters-in-law, North and Mildred Smith of Mount Airy and John Lester and Lena Smith of Archdale; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Emma Jones Smith of Denton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Delmar Gray Smith. A graveside service will be held Friday, July 8, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Culler Family Cemetery in Claudville, VA, with John Lester Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 1200 until 1:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
