Mr. Clayton Roscoe Creed, 92, of 558 Old Creed Road, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2013, at his home. Mr. Creed was born October 2, 1920, in Surry County, one of eight children born to the late Richard Zan and Minnie Alberta Smith Creed. As a child, Clayton was reared on a family farm in the White Plains community. Clayton was inducted into the United States Navy in 1944, where he served as a seaman first class during World War II, and he later retired from General Motors Corporation after 22 years of service. He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Creed Bowman of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. and Vicky Creed of Mount Airy; two daughters-in-law, Norma Holder Creed and Linda Creed Benge, both of Mount Airy; twelve grandchildren, Heather Bowman, Kristy Creed, Tammy Ring, Tony Creed, Tonya Priddy, Rodney Creed, Kim Davis, Tracey Badgett, Tina Perez, Ted Creed, Christopher Bowman, and Adam Bowman; numerous great-grandchildren, including "Grandpa's Girl," Chloe; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Faye Creed Danley of Mount Airy; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Elbert Creed and Coy and Ila Mae Creed, all of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Creed was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Emilie Storz Creed; three sons, Rondal Creed, Ray Creed, and Mitchell Creed; a sister, Emmie Susan Creed Crissman; and three brothers, James Anderson Creed, Richard Alvin Creed, and Emmett Lee Creed. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Dover Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Pickens officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Tina Leonard, RN, and Wendy Rozier, CNA.
