Mr. Cleve Wallace Hemmings, 73, of Dobson, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 14, 1937, in Surry County, to the late Daniel Webster and Alma Poindexter Hemmings. Mr. Hemmings, along with his brother, was a retired self-employed excavator operator, former co-owner of Surry Rest Home, and a member of Dobson First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Navy to which he enlisted after his high school graduation. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 48 years, Nancy "Tootie" Branch Hemmings of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tina Hemmings Wiles and Vicki Hemmings Felts and Joe, all of Dobson; four grandchildren, whom he adored, Cody Felts, Casey Felts, Kayla Wiles, and Alexis Wiles; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Betty Hemmings and David and Peggy Hemmings, all of Dobson; two sisters, Lucille Rosendahl and Bertha Jewel Hemmings, both of Raleigh; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Kay and Alex Shugart of Yadkinville and Patti and Jerry Taylor of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law and his wife, Mike and Debbie Branch of Dobson; and several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hemmings was preceded in death by a son, Cleve W. "Chuck" Hemmings, II; three sisters, Violet Llewellyn, Loree Southard, and Myrtle Stewart; and three brothers, Ambrose Woodruff, Max Woodruff, and Jim Dan Hemmings. His funeral service will be held Sunday, October 3, 2010, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody-Davis Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
