Mr. Clifton “Cricket” Ayers, 81, of Lowgap, passed away Monday afternoon, February 13, 2017, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Ayers was born December 30, 1935, in Carroll County, VA, the son of the late Solmon and Sullar Mae Guynn Ayers. Cricket served our country in the United States Army Reserves. He retired from Proctor-Silex Inc. after 35 years of service and later from Bowman Roofing. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Carolyn Ayers of Lowgap; his grandchildren, Christopher and Courtney Ayers of Mount Airy and Jamie and Vicky Hale of Cana, VA; his great-grandchildren, Dixie Sebastian, Abigail Hale, and Kimberly Hale; a brother, Charles Cecil Ayers of North Wilkesboro; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Ayers and Ester Ayers, both of Cana, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Shotto Ayers; and three brothers, Seawaltz Ayers, Junior Ayers, and Roger “Porter” Ayers. The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Barry Clement officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Spur Cemetery in Fancy Gap, VA. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Rodney and Carolyn Ayers at 3163 Pine Ridge Road, Lowgap. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
