Mr. Clyde Milton Marshall, 82, of Ararat, VA, passed away on Thursday afternoon, December 16, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Patrick County on August 25, 1939, to the late Ulus Herman Marshall and Elsie Hazel Dawson Marshall. He was a faithful member of Willis Gap Baptist Church until his health prevented him from attending. He led the choir for a short period of time and helped anyway he could. Mr. Marshall proudly served our country in the US Army during peace time in the Battery B 5th Missile Battalion 6th Artillery in Germany. When Clyde was honorably discharged from the US Army, he started running a saw and worked his way up to maintenance in several furniture factories and NC Granite Corp. Clyde worked at Inman’s Electric before becoming a self-employed electrical and plumbing contractor, he then worked at Sanders Electric. Following this, Mr. Marshall decided he would further his education. He received his GED and his Associate in Arts from Surry Community College, a BS degree from Radford College in Education, a Master’s in Education from Radford College in 1979. He received his Master’s in Administration in 1984 from Radford University. Lastly, he received his Advanced Graduate Studies from Virginia Polytechnical Institute in 1989. Mr. Marshall taught school in the Patrick County School System for 29 years and was named in Who’s Who in American Teachers. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of nearly 59 years, Peggy Ruth Gunnell Marshall of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffery Clyde Marshall and wife Regina of Ararat, VA, and Kevin Milton Marshall of the home; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Lou Gates, Hazel and Warren Easter, and Velma Anders; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Velda Marshall, and Clifford and Judy Marshall; a brother-in-law, Otto Hiatt; and a sister-in-law, Delight Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by three sisters, Iris Mozelle Marshall Hawks Puckett, Nellie Marie Marshall Hiatt, and Ocie Elizabeth Marshall Nichols, her husband, Robert Nichols, and by five brothers, Roy Owen Marshall, Milburn Lafayette Marshall, Kenneth Lee Marshall, John Douglas Marshall, and Ellis Herman Marshall. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday afternoon, December 21, 2021, at 2:00 PM in the Gunnell Family Cemetery with the Pastor Josh Jenkins officiating. The VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and Mt. Airy Post 2019 will provide military honors. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy on Tuesday from 12:30 – 1:30 PM. The Marshall family would like to express a sincere thank you to all the family, friends, and caregivers, Dr. Mark Dodd, Novant Oncology, and the Ararat and Blue Ridge Rescue Squad for all the love and care given to them during Clyde’s illness and their time of need.
