Coley Fred Jones, Sr.

Mr. Coley Fred Jones, Sr., 93, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday morning, January 7, 2021, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  Mr. Jones was born September 9, 1927, in Surry County, one of ten children born to the late John Ed and Jenny Lou Nichols Jones.  Coley was reared in the White Plains community and graduated from White Plains High School.  Following his high school graduation, he proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II.  Coley worked at Centel Telephone Company and retired as a lineman leader after 35 years of service.  He volunteered countless hours at Northern Regional Hospital for 16 years, in addition to driving a school bus for Surry County Schools for 18 years.  He was a business partner in C.F. Jones Classic Café and Ice Cream and was the current owner and operator of The Copper Pot Restaurant.  Coley was a Christian and a faithful member and deacon of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.  He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Coley Fred Jones, Jr. and Karen DeVos Jones of Mount Airy; a grandson, Andrew Jones of Mount Airy; a stepgrandson, Robert DeVos of Pinnacle; a sister, Ila Jones Chilton of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Fay Bennett Jones; two sisters, Stella Jones Rumley and Frances Jones Kidd; and six brothers, Claude Jones, Paul Jones, Ira Jones, Wesley Jones, Buford Jones, and Roy Jones.  A service of worship and celebration of Coley’s life will be held Sunday, January 10, 2021, at 2:30 PM at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Scott Schuyler and the Rev. Rusty Reed officiating.  Burial will follow in the Quesinberry Family Cemetery in Fancy Gap, VA.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 2:30 PM at the church.  Due to public health concerns, attendees are requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
