Mr. Coy Norman Rakes age 86 of Stuart, passed away Saturday January 26, 2008 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on August 27, 1921 to the late Homer and Nannie Martin Rakes. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rakes was preceded in death by one sister Thelma Jean Reynolds, four brothers Clarence, Howard, Leonard, and Marion Rakes. Mr. Rakes was a retired electrician and painter. He served in the United States Army during WWII, and a member of the Lawsonville Baptist Church.
Mr. Rakes is survived by his wife Mabel Dalton Rakes of Stuart. Five daughters, Brenda Myers of Stuart, Sharon and Roger Mabe of Woodlawn, Va. Norma and Tim Goard of Stuart, Carol and R. J. Hall of Stuart, and Ruth Bushnell of Stuart. One sister Pauline Handy of Martinsville, Va. 9 grandchildren Barry Simmons, Michelle Rivera, Dwain Lawson, Joey Mabe, Amanda Hylton, Jessica Owens, Travis Hall, Andrea Hall, and Barbara Lee: 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Rakes will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor David Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Rakes/Martin Family Cemetery in Stuart with military rites by the Patrick County Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and other times at the home of Norma Goard 1670 Poplar Drive, Stuart, Va.
