Mr. Curtiss Hoover Sutphin, 80, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born March 31, 1929, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Ewell Lee and Lubenda Eula Bowman Sutphin. Mr. Sutphin bravely served his country as a United States Marine during the Cuban Crisis, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam War, receiving numerous decorations and also a member of the DAV. Mr. Sutphin is survived by a daughter, Emma Woods of Tucson, AZ; a son, Terrence Sutphin of Memphis, TN; three grandchildren; a sister, Irene Payne of Lancaster, SC; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sutphin was preceded in death by a sister, Athylene Hatcher. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, by Chaplain Jerry Keegans. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
