Daniel Mckinley Dockery, Sr. left this earthly life the morning of July 4th, 2018 knowing three things; he had been a good man and husband, he loved his family and his family loved him, and heaven would “know” him and was waiting to welcome him home. There just isn’t much else one man could want.
Daniel (Kenny, to family and friends) was born February 23rd, 1930 to Luther Sam and Tommie B Comer Dockery. He had three brothers and two sisters, and they were always close. One brother and sister still live, and our hearts and prayers go out to them, and the children and grandchildren of the whole family.
In 1952, after returning from service in the Korean War, Kenny married Rebecca Sue Doub. For the next 66 years they made a good life; and whatever life brought them, their love got them through. Kenny retired from Roadway Express, and Becky from Forsyth Memorial Hospital. They had two children, Dr. Patricia Dockery Weavil (Ricky) in 1954 and Daniel, Jr. (Ginger) in 1956. They have four grandchildren, Rebecca Dockery Weavil Thompson (Jeff), Daniel M. Dockery, III (Audra), Robert Lee Dockery and Salem Virginia Dockery.
Kenny Dockery loved farming, and could fix anything, but he always had a special place in his heart for horses. He understood them, and celebrated his own freedoms while urging them on with a flip of the reins or a nudge of the heel. He also reveled in his grandkids, and found an absolute joy in alternately teasing them and praising them. No story was too small that he wouldn’t repeat it with a satisfied smile.
His stories, about childhood, family, friends, war, were all well told and offered a rich tale of life and love. His smile painted an equally rich portrait of a man who found fortune and wealth in giving love and making sure love was known to those who mattered most to him.
Daniel Mckinley Dockery, Sr. (Kenny) will be laid to rest Saturday, July 7th, 2018 at the Dockery Cemetery on Twin Oaks Rd. in Elkin’s Union Cross community. After the graveside service family and friends will be welcomed at the home of Dan and Ginger Dockery in Pfafftown, NC.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation dedicated to Kenny’s memory and to the continued upkeep of the Dockery Cemetery. Those donations can be made by check to: Amy Dockery, and tagged Dockery Cemetery Fund. Mail to: Amy Dockery, 206 Dobbins Mill Rd., Elkin, NC 28621
