David Alton Cassell

David Alton Cassell, lovingly known as "Pop", passed away at age 80, on Dec. 12, 2018.  Born in Mt. Airy, N.C. to the late Latishia M. and Samuel A. Cassell.  He was a life-long resident of Newport News and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a welding instructor.  David was a dedicated, longtime member of First Friends Church, Hampton.  Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Peggy M. Cassell; daughters, Donna Lynn Rivers (George), Shelia G. Butner (Carl), Cynthia A. Parker; sons, David Mitch Cassell, and Charlie W. Bolton, Jr.; sisters, Dorothy "Dot" L. Clifton and Betty Lou Nester; brother, Billy "Bill" G. Cassell; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.  The family will gather immediately following burial at 29 Edgemont Drive, Hampton, VA.
