David Adams Flippin, Sr

David Adams Flippin, Sr., 83, of Greensboro, NC passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Moses Cone Hospital. He was born in Stuart, Virginia on May 18, 1927, to the late Jesse Milton and Addie Adams Flippin. He graduated from Stuart High School and attended Virginia Military Institute and High Point University earning his Certified Property and Casualty Underwriter designation. He served in the United States Army immediately after World War II, stationed in Germany and, after returning, married Sarah Francis Brown on August 2, 1950 in High Point, NC. He was employed by Jefferson-Pilot Insurance Company as a Property and Casualty Underwriter and a Risk Manager for the City of Asheville and Buncombe County, and later for the city of Greensboro and Guilford County. He was a volunteer fireman for over 40 years. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason for over 50 years with the Corinthian Lodge #542, a member of The Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 14 of Greensboro. David was an elder of Christ Community Church. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, and was an avid reader. In addition to his parents, Mr. Flippin was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Ruth Flippin, Jessie Flippin Davis, Virginia Flippin Gilbert, J. "Bill" Flippin , and James William Flippin.
Mr. Flippin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Francis Brown Flippin, of the home; daughter Ellen Flippin Smith, her husband, William Siegfried Smith, III and sons, William Siegfried Smith, IV and Jacob Alexander Smith, all of Eden, NC; son David Adams Flippin, Jr., his wife, Kellie Brennan Flippin, M.D., and daughters Katherine Hill Flippin and Hannah Lawton Flippin, and Ashley, Tyler, and Dustin Rizzieri, all of Winston-Salem, NC.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 13, at 11:00 a.m. in the Stuart Cemetery with Reverand John Kimmons officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart, Virginia.
