Mr. Daylon Thomas Greene, 83, of Pilot Mountain, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, following a brief illness. Daylon was born August 25, 1935, in Nash County, to the late Joseph Edmond Greene and Tassie Coppedge Greene of Spring Hope. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Cates Greene. He was the beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to a devoted son, David Christopher Greene of Gaffney, SC, and grandchildren, Zion Samuel Thomas Greene of Mooresville and Alex Zoe Greene of Hiddenite; a cherished daughter, Joan Elizabeth Folger, a son-in-law, Harry L. Folger, Jr. of Dobson, granddaughters, Meredith Claire Wilhoit of Pilot Mountain and Evangeline Bailey Wilhoit of Dobson, grandchildren, Matt Henderson Folger and Kasey McHargue of Dobson, Eli Kendra Folger of Myrtle Beach, SC, Jason Lee Phillips and Star Lee Phillips of Mooresville, Jessica Lynn Phillips and Shane Watts of Hiddenite, and loving great grandson, Skyler Gray Moser of Pilot Mountain. Daylon was preceded in death by a brother, Alex Edmond Green; two sisters, Elsie Griffin and Blonnie Windley; and his namesake, a cherished great-grandson, Daylon Lee Moser. He leaves his memories to be cherished by his loving sisters, Nevada Strickland of Rocky Mount, Maebelle Slumpff of Sun City West, AZ, and Vera Batchlor (Adolphus) of Clayton. He has many special nieces and nephews. Daylon was a graduate of Wake Forest University, being in the first graduating class on the new campus in Winston-Salem. He then received his Master of Divinity at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, during which time he completed an internship at Murdock Center for the Developmentally Disabled and became interested in the social work and mental health fields. He served as Director of Social Services in Caswell County from 1963 – 1969, during which time he received his Master of Social Work degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He developed and served as Director of Henry Wiseman Kendall Center in Greensboro, a facility for adults and children with development disabilities. Daylon then became the Area Director of Mental Health for Guilford County in Greensboro, Area Director of Tri-County Mental Health in Salisbury, and Director of the Developmental Disabilities Program at Crossroads Mental Health for Surry County, where he retired in 1995 after 33 years of dedicated service to his career. He loved his family and dedicated his life to caring for them and ministering to others. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Airy, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. A celebration of life will be held Friday, August 31, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. Flowers will be received, or memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
