Donald Ray Akers

Mr. Donald Ray Akers, 63, of Mount Airy, passed away at his home on Monday March 6, 2017. He was born in Surry County on April 11, 1953 to the late Lonnie Eldridge Akers and Dovie Edwards Akers. Mr. Akers was retired from Mount Airy City Schools maintenance department after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Akers was an avid bowler and had a love for walking in the mornings, and a he was dedicated member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Akers is survived by his wife, Teresa Utt Akers; daughter, Tonya Akers and friend Rob Shillinglaw; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sheila Durham and husband Richard, Connie Glidewell and husband Rodney, and Wanda Akers; brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas Akers and wife Beverly, and Terry Edwards and wife Linda; and his mother-in-law, Rachel Utt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Akers was preceded in death by his son, Luke Akers; and a sister, Linda Akers. Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Benfield and Major Terry Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday March 9, 2017 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church building fund, 922 Banner St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.
