Donald Raymond Armstrong

Mr. Donald Raymond Armstrong, 91, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, December 18, 2022, at the VA Hospice Community Living Center in Salisbury.  Mr. Armstrong was born November 3, 1931, in Fulton County, GA, to the late Raymond Fair and Henrietta Turnbull Armstrong.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.  Donald was a member of Central United Methodist Church.  During the Korean War, he served proudly in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division.  He retired after 25 years with the Mount Airy Police Department as a detective lieutenant.  After retirement from the Mount Airy Police Department, Donald spent 10 years working for Neighbors Stores, Inc., owned by Gary York, collecting bad checks in 26 stores.  He is survived by his daughter, Susan Armstrong Walker (Mike); his grandchildren, Candice Sanford (John), Joshua Chilton, Shane Chilton (Felicia), and Sarah Mae Chilton; his great-grandchild, Grace Chilton; his sister-in-law, Mary Botkin; a nephew, Martin Botkin (Kathy); and a niece, Mary Scott (Bruce).  In addition to his parents, Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 61 years, Evelyn Marie Phillips Armstrong; a daughter, Donna Rae Armstrong; and two sisters, Margaret Faye Ferris and Lois May Armstrong.  The family will conduct a private service on Monday, December 26, 2022, at Skyline Memory Gardens, with Police Chaplain Gray Shelton officiating.  Military honors will also be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.  The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, the staff at the Veterans Administration Home Care, the staff at the Veterans Administration Hospice Community Living Center, the staff at Ridgecrest Assisted Living, and many kind friends.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Mount Airy Police Department, P.O. Box 1244, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
