Donald Ray Clifton

Donald Ray Clifton, age 81, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born July 1, 1943, in Surry County to the late Marlin Clifton and Mae Creed Clifton. Donald was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Judy Burcham Clifton. He was a proud and loving father to his two children: Derrick Clifton and wife, Cydna Anne, and Emily Hardy and husband, Rodney. Donald had nine grandchildren, Sydney Clifton, Morgan Clifton, Alexandra Niston (Jacob), Ellie Niston, Madelyn Claire Niston, Redding Vaughn, Harry Vaughn, Griffin Hardy (Kathryn), and Claire Hardy; one great-grandchild, Aubry Jane Hahn; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Mickey Vestal; and one brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Sharon Clifton. A dedicated member of Union Hill Friends Church, Donald lived his faith through service to others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, finding true happiness in making life easier for those around him. Donald worked for many years at Henredon Furniture as the head of maintenance. He later retired from Surry County Schools where he took pride in his work as a custodian. Donald was a founding member of the bluegrass band, The Country Boys, which was established over 50 years ago. His love for music led to special friendships as well as opportunities to play onstage with many well-known musicians. He always said he has played with the best. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Union Hill Friends Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, Post Office Box 325, Dobson, North Carolina 27017.Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements.
