Donald Leroy Mains

Mr. Donald Leroy “Hippie” Mains, 75, of Stuart, VA, passed away Monday night, March 28, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  Mr. Mains was born January 3, 1947, in Granite Falls, MN, one of four children born to the late Harry Leroy and Edith Myrtle Severeign Mains.  Don was reared in Minnesota.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served our country from August 27, 1964, to August 30, 1968, during which time he served actively in the Vietnam War.  Following his time in the Marine Corps, he attended Winston-Salem State University for a degree in education, graduating in 1974.  He later earned his master’s degree from Appalachian State University in 1976.  Don retired from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools as a special education art teacher in 2004.  Later, he taught from 2006 to 2008 in the Patrick County School System.  He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sherry Jean Smith Mains of the home; a son, Larry Mains of Greensboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Kent Powell and Melanie and Mark Sloan, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Bob Hayes of Westminster, MD, Julie and David Chamberlain of Chaplin, MN, and Lorie and Joe Tihlarik of Onamia, MN.  The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 3, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Chris McMillian officiating.  At the conclusion of the service, military honors will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC  27017; or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC  27103.
