Mr. Donald Roy Shrader, 73, a local business owner in Mt. Airy NC, passed away Monday, July 19, 2021. Don was born in Bluefield, WV, on August 3, 1947, to the late Roy Jones Shrader and June Meek Shrader Patrick. Don is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Speak Shrader; his son Roy Patrick Shrader and wife Heather; his daughter Timmesa Shrader Wishart and husband Chris; his grandchildren Claire, Donald Roy II, and Reese Shrader; Megan, Matthew, and Samuel Eads; and Isabel and Lauren Wishart. He is also survived by three brothers Randy (Pat), Kent (Robin), and Mark (Yang Ge); niece Erin Shrader-Amason and nephew Nathan Shrader. Don graduated from Tazewell High School in 1965, earned his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Wesleyan University, and then his master’s degree at the University of Virginia. He taught in the Charlottesville, Virginia City School System for many years in elementary education. He and Sue started Creative Sewing Machines, Inc. in 1983 in Tazewell, Virginia and then moved the business to Mt. Airy in July 1997. Don was passionate about woodworking and gardening. He had a beautiful baritone voice, and he took great pride in his business. Among the many loving things he did was to send Sue a yellow rose (their wedding flower) every Tuesday as a token of their friendship and love. He regularly expressed to Sue, “Honey, I know I ain’t the best husband in the world, but I love you the best I know how!” Don loved his family and friends, and he will be greatly missed by them. A memorial visitation will be held Friday, July 23, 2021, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 3:00 until 4:00. A reception will be held immediately following the visitation at Old North State Winery. Moody Funeral Service is serving the Shrader family.
