Donald Ray Thompson

Mr. Donald Ray Thompson, 76, of 1800 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Thompson was born June 16, 1936, in Surry County, to the late Augustus Parson and Jennie Puckett Thompson. He was the retired owner and operator of The Drapery House and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lavon Atkinson Thompson of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sherri Thompson and Cathy and Tim Howlett, all of Mount Airy; four grandchildren and their spouses, Travis and Rhonda Howlett of China Grove, Tyler and Sunyoung Howlett of El Paso, TX, and Timon and Meghan Howlett and Tanna Howlett, all of Mount Airy; six great-grandchildren, Tytus Thompson Lorenz Howlett, Tucker Ray Howlett, Taylor Marie Howlett, Trenton William Howlett, Traelyn Brae Howlett, Terrah Gwynn Howlett, and soon-to-be-here Emma Marie Howlett; a sister and brother-in-law, Alta and Jimmy Johnson of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, June Martin of Mount Airy and Kay and Lon Williford of Indian Land, SC; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Ashburn "Doc" and Anna Atkinson of Thelma, KY. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Faye Thompson; three brothers, William Parson Thompson, James Edward "Ed" Thompson, and Roger Lee Thompson; and a brother-in-law, Grant Martin. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 29, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex Martin and the Rev. Alfred Ayscue officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
