Mr. Donald Guyer Wilcox, 84 of Mount Airy passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Wilcox was born on July 31, 1937, in Surry County to the late Carlie and Thelma Ester Guyer Wilcox. Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. Donald was a jack of all trades, he passed his carpentry skills on to his son whom he was extremely proud of and today is a respected and talented carpenter in Surry County. Donald was instrumental in building the Schlitz plant that later became Stroh’s Brewery in Winston-Salem where he worked for 30 years and was well known for his joking and picking with others. Donald loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all that knew him. Left to cherish his memoires are his wife of 65 years, Shelby Poff Wilcox; four daughters and sons-in-law, Robin Leonard, Lisa Simpson, Tracy Hall (Doug), and Heather Payne (David); one son and daughter in-law, Steven Guyer Wilcox (Jeanette); three grandchildren, Cody Guyer Simpson (Candice), Austin Payne, Ashley Payne; step-grandchildren, Amy Slate (David); Jamie Cooke (Angie); three great-grandchildren, Amelia Rose Simpson, Wyatt Simpson, Riley Payne; four step great-grandchildren, Jacob Slate (Chelsea), Mackenzie Cooke, Emma Cooke, Annie P. Slate; sisters, Kay Wilcox Haymore, Gaye Wilcox McKeithan; brother-in-law, Ronnie Poff; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Greg Hensley, Jason Lawson, and Tom Watts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilcox was preceded in the death by a sister, Peggy Wilcox King; and a brother, Bruce Wilcox. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Skyline Memory Gardens at 2:00 PM with Rev. Tony Goins officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, from 12:00 PM until 1:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their love and compassionate care for Mr. Wilcox during his illness.
