Mr. Donnie James York, 75, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born November 25, 1946, in Surry County, to the late James Haywood York and Cleo Mauldin. Mr. York served as a sergeant in the United States Air Force for four years, a sergeant for the Mount Airy Police Department, and retired from Greyhound Bus Lines after 30 years of service. Donnie was a strong Christian and served as a deacon at The Church of Pine Ridge. Left to cherish his memories are a son and daughter-in-law, David and Jody York; a daughter, Melissa Tackett; three grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Dustin York, Katelyn York, and Macy Tackett; three sisters, Deborah York, Cheryl Brannock, and Gail Easter; many friends and neighbors; and the Kirkman and Tilley families. In addition to his parents, Mr. York was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Betty Lou Kirkman York. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 25, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Oakley officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. No formal visitation will be held; however, Mr. York will lie-in-state Sunday from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM at the funeral home. In leu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Shriners Hospital for Children at www.donate.lovetotherescue.org.
