Mrs. Dora Dean Bates Calhoun, 72, of Dobson, passed away Thursday morning, March 10, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 26, 1939, in Surry County, to the late Johnny William and Ethel Adaline Coe Bates. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Wayne "G I" Calhoun; and a son, Johnny Wayne Calhoun. Mrs. Calhoun was an active member of Salem Baptist Church. She retired from Washington Mills, Tultex, Cross Creek, and the cafeteria staff at Surry Community College in Dobson. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David Wayne and Sandra Calhoun of Dobson; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Calhoun Davis of Dobson; two grandchildren and their spouses, Josh and Victoria Calhoun of Dobson and Jennifer and Jesse Edwards of Fort Irwin, CA; a great-granddaughter, Josie Calhoun of Dobson; a sister, Joanna Hutchins of Dobson; and a brother and sister-in-law, William B. and Margaret Bates of Elkin. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church, with Dr. Bobby Lewis and the Rev. Darrell Tate officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 430 Rockford Road, Dobson, NC 27017 or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.


Service Information

The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church, with Dr. Bobby Lewis and the Rev. Darrell Tate officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson.
