Dora Ann Wood

Dora Ann Johnson Wood died on June 1, 2022, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, S.M. “Mack” Wood and two sons, Bert and Mary Beth Wood and Michael and Diane Wood both of Mt. Airy. She has five grandchildren: Jarod and Dena Wood, Anna and Dane DeHaan, Catherine and Zach Marquand, Dr. Lauren Wood and Scott Satterwhite and Cynthia Wood and fiancée Joey Scott. She also has five great grandchildren: Nick Wood, Bowie DeHaan, Elliot Marquand, Bert DeHaan and Dashiell Marquand  Dora Ann worked as a secretary and substitute teacher with the Mount Airy School System until she retired. She was born May 13, 1935, and her father, Joseph G. “Joe Bill” Johnson died when she was 2 years old. Her mother, Ruby Lee Edwards Johnson and both the Johnson and Edwards families wrapped Dora Ann in love and support. Dora Ann traveled often or stayed at the beach or Claytor Lake as the two boys grew up and Ruby (“Granny”) was always included. Later in life and as Granny’s health deteriorated, Dora Ann opened up her home and provided years of care for her. Dora Ann was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy and volunteered in the church and the community.  Even as Dora Ann’s memory slipped away, she could still recall the words and sing many old hymns and that gave her and the family comfort. One of her favorite hymns was “Peace in the Valley“. While she sought it often and it was sometimes elusive, she has now found it. The family would like to thank many caregivers, friends and American Healthcare Services who have assisted during the past decade including John, Susan, Penny, Nancy, Betty and many others.  There will be a funeral and committal service at First Baptist Church on N. Main Street in Mt Airy, NC at 2.30 pm on Sunday June 5th. Persons may also ‘attend’ remotely. Note the link at www.fbcmountairy.org  or  The family requests cards and letters be mailed to Mack at 207 Parker Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wood Family Scholarship at Surry Community College, 630 S Main Street, Dobson, NC 27017 to assist students in nursing studies or Yokefellow Ministry at 215 Jones School Road, Mt. Airy, NC 27030
