Mrs. Doris Atkinson Shinault Age 84 of 641 South South St. Mt. Airy passed away Saturday October 8, 2011 at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Shinault was born October 2, 1927 in Surry County to the late Sidney and Sadie Scott Atkinson. Mrs. Shinualt graduated from Beulah High School in 1945 where she played basketball and went on to graduate from Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. Mrs. Shinualt retired as a registered nurse after 43 years of service working in several hospitals including Martin Memorial Hospital, San Francisco Hospital in California, Northern Surry Hospital of Surry County and was a nurse for the well known Dr. Sudor. Doris was a longtime member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church and after her retirement attended services at the Salvation Army Church in Mt. Airy where she volunteered for over 20 years and received many awards for her service. Doris also went on many trips with the Salvation Army to aid victims of disasters. Doris was a longtime member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She and her late husband J.C. were avid bowlers for many years in Mt. Airy. Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law Delmer Dee and Mona Atkinson of Elon, NC., six nieces Sheree Atkinson Pedigo of Ruffin, NC., Luci Atkinson Spivey and husband Mike of Liberty, NC., Judy Phillips Barnes, Tommye Lynn Phillips and Linda Welborn Cannoy and husband Larry all of Mt. Airy and Paula Welborn of Pilot Mountain and by two nephews, Delmer Atkinson, Jr. and wife Jan of Wake Forest, NC. and Clyde "Pete" Welborn and wife Paulette of Pilot Mountain. In addition to her parents Mrs. Shinualt was preceded in death by her husband J.C. Shinault, two sisters Oberay Atkinson Phillips and Senia Atkinson Welborn. Funeral services will be held Monday October 10, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy with services conducted by Major Michael Rodgers with burial to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday night 6 to 8 P.M. at the Moody Funeral Home in Mt.
