Mrs. Dorothy Lee “Dot” Cassell Clifton, aka Nanny, 90, of Lowgap, passed away Monday afternoon, August 16, 2021, at her home with her loving husband and family by her side. She was born in White Plains, NC on March 31, 1931, the oldest of four children born to the late Samuel Austin Cassell and Tishie Marion Cassell. Mrs. Clifton attended Westside Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. Nanny was well known for her cooking abilities. You never came to visit without being offered a piece of cake or a glass of tea. She will always be remembered for her hospitality and the many friendships she made over the years. From the first grandchild to the last great-grandchild, there was no difference in the love that our sweet Nanny had for all of us. Dot was retired from Beulah Elementary School. Mrs. Clifton is survived by her loving husband of almost 69 years, John Lesley Clifton; a son and daughter-in-law, Alton “Al” and Denise Clifton; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Junior Barker; five grandchildren, Kathryn and Marlin Mabe, Andrew and Karmen Clifton, Austin and Joanna Barker, Cassie Barker and her fiancé Zack Weddle, and Rhiannon and Erik Spencer; six great-grandchildren, Kaydence, Kasden, Jessica, McKayla, Charlie, and Marleigh Kate; a sister, Betty Lou Cassell Nester; brother, Bill Cassell; sister-in-law, Peggy Cassell; and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Clifton was preceded in death by an infant sister, Imogene Cassell; brother, David Alton Cassell, brother-in-law, Red Nester; and by a sister-in-law, Martha Jean Cassell. A service of worship and celebration of Dot’s life will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Steve Johnson officiating. There will not be any formal visitation at the funeral home, but the family is gathering at Nanny and Pa’s house. Special thanks to Surry Rural Health, Dr. Challie Minton and nurses Regina and Marilyn. Also, to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care nurse Celena for all of the love and care she gave. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made to White Plains Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, 849 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
