Dorothy Reeves Key

Mrs. Dorothy Reeves Key passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 1, 2022, at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem.  She was born November 30, 1921, in Surry County, to the late Thomas Benton Reeves and Mamie Jackson Reeves.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 67 years, Walter Irving Key.

Dorothy is survived by her devoted daughters, Charlotte Key Brown (Ron Morgan) and Amy Key Ogburn; three grandchildren, William Horton “Chip” Petree III (Tucker), Stacy Petree Davis (Steven), and Hudson Reeves Ogburn (Amir Quezada); and six great-grandchildren, Wesley Hurst Davis, Henry Ashworth Petree, William Jackson Davis, Anna Winston Davis, Walter Scott Petree, and George Troendly Petree.  She is also survived by her sister, Lillian Reeves Horner; her sister-in-law, Rachel Key Lowry; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and wonderful mother whose life was filled with love, family, and friends.  She adored her family and served and guided them in so many ways.  She was an incredible cook and found great pleasure in treating her family to amazing meals and baked goods, most especially her fried apple pies.  Within the past year, she arranged a cooking lesson with her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter to “teach” them how to continue her traditions in “Nana’s Kitchen.”  She was a thoughtful and loyal friend to so many and loved them all dearly.  Her artistic talents were appreciated by all who knew her.  She was a talented seamstress, creating ensembles for her daughters throughout their growing years.  She was a wonderful pianist, played the violin, and taught piano lessons to young children for many years.  She loved creating her needlework projects and writing poetry.

A proud and faithful member of Knollwood Baptist Church, Dorothy considered her church to be her second home and family.  Beginning in 1959, she gave her time and energies to her beloved church where she served on numerous committees, was actively involved in the music ministry, and taught Sunday school with her husband for many years.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Dorothy’s family gives sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at the Brookridge Prince Health Care Center for their exceptional care, love, and compassion, and to the ministers and members of Knollwood Baptist Church for their loving support, visits, and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Knollwood Music Ministry, 330 Knollwood Street, Winston-Salem, NC  27104; or the Brookridge Prince Health Care Center, Brookridge Development Office, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, NC  27106.
