Dorothy Helen Hall Payne

Mrs. Dorothy Helen Hall Payne, 88, of Mt. Airy went on to continue her life with her Lord on Thursday, November 7, 2013. She was surrounded by her loving family as well as her compassionate care giver at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born in Surry County on December 10, 1924 to the late Clayton Milas and Julia Gravley Hall. Mrs. Payne was retired from Quality Mills and was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Payne married Troy L. Payne, Sr. October 18, 1946. They shared many long years together. Mr. Payne became a fixture at the hospital as he visited his dear wife. Dot was a woman of great faith who loved her church and all of its activities. Some of her fondest memories were leading and participating in the WMU, teaching Sunday School Class, leading Acteens and GA's. Wherever there was a need she was there. She also became a legend in the church for her famous pound cake with that wonderful cream cheese icing. Because of her Christianity, she too is celebrating her life. The family would like to thank the nurses, nursing assistants, housekeeping staff and recreational staff for each act of kindness. Because you cared and gave freely of yourselves daily, Mrs. Dot lived a great eight years at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She is survived by her husband, Troy Payne, Sr. of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Troy Payne, Jr. and Becky of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Tyler Payne of Mt. Airy, and Courtney Mills Payne of Charlotte; a sister, Frances McHone of Mt. Airy; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by sisters, Margie Johnson, Mary Hall, Irene Smith, and Ollie Mathews; a brother, Oscar Hall. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 10, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday at the church from 1:30 PM until time of the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you honor Mrs. Dot with remembrances of memorials to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church 319 Rockford Street, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy is assisting the Payne family. Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
