Mrs. Dorothy Marion Atkins Simmons, 74, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday morning, September 15, 2021, at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living Facility. Mrs. Simmons was born November 9, 1946, in Forsyth County, one of five children born to the late Glenn Marshall and Ona Marion Atkins. Dorothy was a devoted housewife and attended Grace Moravian Church until her health declined. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Scarlett and Bob Dowdy of Mount Airy; a son, Eddie Simmons of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Meredith Dowdy, Jacob Simmons, Brenan Simmons, and Cameron Simmons; a sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and Ted Yankush of Westfield; a brother, Marshall Glenn Atkins of Pilot Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward “Eddie” Simmons, Sr.; an infant son, Todd Edward Simmons; a sister, Vicki Davis; and a brother, William Paul “Billy” Atkins. A service of worship and celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held Sunday, September 19, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with the Rev. Dr. Neil Routh officiating. No formal visitation will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Laurel Ridge Camp and Conference Center, 124 Pendry Drive, Laurel Springs, NC 28644 (www.laurelridge.org). Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
