Dorothy Fay Booker Chappell Smith

Mrs. Dorothy Fay “Dot” Booker Chappell Smith, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, May 6, 2016, at Ridgecrest Assisted Living Community. Mrs. Smith was born February 14, 1930, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Joseph Samuel and Una Williams Booker. After her parents passed away, she was raised by her grandparents, Jessie Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Booker. Dot was a lifelong member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. She was the co-owner of Cooke Trucking Company and helped build this company into the success it is today. She is survived by her husband, Paige Smith of the home; a son and his family, Sam and Denise Chappell of Lowgap, Brandy Chappell of Tarboro, and Ellie and Tyre Needham of Shoals; a son and his family, Bruce Chappell of Mount Airy and Leigh Ann Davis of Pfafftown; a stepdaughter and her husband, Melba and Steve Hull of Mount Airy; a stepson and his wife, David and Sandy Smith of Mount Airy; seven great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Anne Holyfield and Mary Jo Roberts, both of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by the “love of her life,” Lonnie Woltz “Bun” Chappell; and a daughter-in-law, Heather Gillespie Chappell. The funeral service will be held Monday, May 9, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Robert McCrary and the Rev. Beverly Hatcher officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Ridgecrest Assisted Living Community and her special caregivers.
