Mrs. Dorothy Southard Stanley, age 88, of Dobson, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Family and friends will always remember her devotion as a mother and grandmother, her skills in cooking and gardening, and her knowledge of world events and keen interest in politics. She was born in Surry County on February 12, 1921, to the late Alvin Dixie and Mildred Wall Southard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar William Stanley; sisters Jo Annah Southard and Martha (Sprig) White; brothers, Sebastian, Spurgeon, Swanson, and Coolidge (Luke) Southard. She was a member of Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Jane and Elmer Newman of Elkin, Jenny Stanley of Dobson, her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Peggy Stanley of Dobson, Tim and Faye Stanley of Elkin, Randy and Paula Stanley of Pilot Mountain, Gary and Wanda Stanley of Dobson, and Jay Stanley of the home; fourteen grandchildren, Kevin Newman, Amy Russell, Angie France, Jonathan Stanley, Chad Stanley, Luke Stanley, Sheldon Stanley, Philip Yates, Brett Yates, Meredith Stanley, Will Stanley, Rebekah Stanley, Adam Stanley, and Nicholas Stanley; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sisters and brother-in-law, Lillian Holder of Elkin, Betty Cook of Dobson, Annie and Thomas Ray of Elkin, and Sally Reynolds of Elkin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy Jack and Delores Southard of Elkin, Donald and Jean Southard of Lewisville, NC, Edith Southard of Elkin, Alma Southard of Elkin, and Maxine Mitchell of State Road. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 6, at Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. Rev. Ralph Grose and Rev. Todd Byrd will conduct the services. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6 until 9 PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for the care and compassion given to their mother.
