Mrs. Dorsia “Dot” Leonard Vernon, 89, of Cana, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Central Continuing Care in Mt. Airy. She was born in Carroll County, VA October 3, 1928 to the late Benjamin Harrison and Dovia Ann King Leonard. Mrs. Vernon was never afraid of hard work. She worked in the family business, known as “Vernon Orchard” alongside of her husband of almost 60 years as well as working various other jobs some including Quality Mills and later worked at the Hungry Farmer as “the biscuit maker”. The Old Farmers Curb Market in Greensboro was a weekly trip for many years, carrying fruits and vegetables to be sold. Mrs. Vernon was well known for organizing meals for families after a death in the community and especially at Oak Ridge Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, always ready to assist others. Mrs. Vernon will lovingly be remembered by her son, Lindsey Vernon; daughters and son-in-law, Sherry and Brent Riddle and Donna Jackson; grandchildren and spouses, Holly Gunter and Scott, Ashley Mills and Corey, John Jackson, III and Abigail, Will Jackson and Charlotte, and Ben Jackson; great-grandchildren, Jake Gunter, Cassidy Mills, Carleigh Jo Mills and Able Jackson; grandchildren by choice, Roger Miller and Sara and Damon Whitlock; a sister, Agnes Shelton; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vernon was preceded in death by the love of her life, Hurley Logan Vernon; a son-in-law, John Jackson, Jr.; sisters, Georgia Vernon and Juanita Edwards; and brothers, Harley, Joseph, and Everette Leonard. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 1, 2018 at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. David Sechrist officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the church on Thursday evening, May 31, 2018. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Central Continuing Care Activity Department or Beauty Shop, 1287 Newsome St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Central Continuing Care for the wonderful care that was given to their mother during her stay; and also their deepest appreciation to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
