Mr. Douglas Steven “Steve” Kallam, 85, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday night, April 28, 2023, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Kallam was born October 1, 1937, in Surry County, one of eight children born to the late William Allen and Lilliam Simpson Kallam. Steve was reared on a family farm in the White Plains community and graduated from White Plains High School in 1955. Following his high school graduation, he attended Oak Ridge Military Academy and played on the academy’s baseball and basketball teams. Steve served our country in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Randolph, from January 1959 until January 1963. He retired from Surry County Schools after many years of service, delivering supplies to all the schools and managing the system’s visual equipment. Mr. Kallam was a longtime and faithful member of White Plains Friends Meeting. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma Leftwich Kallam; a son and daughter-in-law, Winston and Karen Kallam; two grandsons, Jake Kallam and Jesse Kallam; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda and Bill Benbow and Judy and Tim Gray; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Kenneth Kallam and Larry and Sharon Kallam; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kallam was preceded in death by a sister, Lou Nell Hardy; and two brothers, Lemuel Wallace Kallam and Randall Simpson Kallam. A service of worship and celebration of Steve’s life will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at 11:00 AM at White Plains Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Dusty Ball and the Rev. Jake Penley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state one hour before the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to White Plains Friends Meeting, 849 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
