Mr. Douglas Rakes, age 75 of Mt. Airy, husband of Dorothy Johnson Rakes, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Rakes was born March 29, 1932 in Surry County to the late Larken and Beatrice DaPalmer Rakes, he was a retired Cook and attended Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are his wife Dorothy Johnson Rakes of the home, One daughter Tammy Upchurch of Mt. Airy, three sons Edward Rakes and Steven Hutchens of Durham, Jeffrey Rakes and Betty Griffith of Mt. Airy and Donnie and Amber Rakes of Lowgap, six grandchildren Courtney Willard, James Willard, Kalie Rakes, Shealin Rakes, Hazel Rakes and Jeffery Rakes, Jr., three sisters Ruth Francis, Betty Jean and James Smith and Wanda and Billy Allen all of Mt. Airy one brother Wayne and Virginia Rakes of Mt. Airy and by his special dog Foxy. In addition to his parents Mr. Rakes was preceded in death by two sisters Lucille Hutson and Sandra Lineberry. Funeral services will be held Tuesday August 28, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church with services conducted by Dr. David Sparks with burial to follow in the Beulahland Baptist Church Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post #2019 and Pilot Mountain Post # 9436. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 AM until time for the service at the church. Moody Funeral Services will be assisting the Rakes family.
