Dr. Edwin Thomas McNamee, Jr. age 85 of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and formerly of Stuart, passed away in Tuscaloosa on Friday, January 18, 2008. He was born on July 23, 1922 in Roanoke to the late Edwin Thomas McNamee and Virginia McNamee. A 1941 graduate of Jefferson High School in Roanoke, Dr. McNamee was a student at Roanoke College prior to entering the army. Following his service in Europe, the Philippine Islands, and Japan during WWII, he returned to Tuscaloosa, where he and Mary Margaret Fellows married in 1946.
Dr. McNamee earned a B.S. degree in biology from the University of Alabama in 1948 and received his medical degree from Tulane University's School of Medicine in 1952. He served his internship at the Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas and later served for a year as regimental surgeon at Ft. Rucker, Alabama.
In 1954, he began his general practice in Stuart, Virginia. He was on the original medical staff at R.J. Reynolds-Patrick Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1962 and was instrumental in establishing the hospital's high standard of care, as well as expanding services provided by the hospital.
Dr. McNamee also served as the county medical examiner. Beginning in 1974, he became a member of the State Medical Board, where he served as President for two terms. He was a charter member and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practitioners. He also was a recipient of the American Medical Association Recognition Award. He was a member of a number of prestigious medical associations, including the American Medial Association, the Medical Society of Virginia, and the Southern Medical Association. Dr. McNamee was a long time member of the Rotary Club, where he served two terms as President of his local chapter.
Esteemed by his colleagues and beloved by his patients, Dr. "Mac", was he was affectionately known, retired in 1987 after 35 years as a medical practitioner, 33 of them in Stuart. In 1995, he and his wife returned to Tuscaloosa to spend the remainder of there retirement.
In addition to his many medical accomplishments, Dr. McNamee was an expert lapidarian and a passionate horticulturalist, with a particular interest in orchids and other tropical plants.
Dr. McNamee is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Margaret Fellows McNamee of Tuscaloosa, four nephews, David McNamee of Alamo, California, Thomas McNamee of Tucson, Arizona, Michael Fisher of Long Beach, California, and Konrad Strauss of Bloomington, Indiana; and two nieces, Lynn McKenzie of Sarasota, Florida and Victoria Strauss of Amherst, Massachusetts.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2008 at 11:00am Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Rev. Dr. Bucky Hunsicker officiating. Burial will follow in the Stuart Cemetery.
