Dr. Hugh Edward Sutphin, Sr., 95, of Mount Airy, a retired local dentist, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, July 12, 2022, at his home. Dr. Sutphin was born March 2, 1927, in Washington, DC, to the late Grady Franklin and Thelma Alene Midkiff Sutphin. He graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1944, and he enlisted in the United States Navy the following week. After World War II, Dr. Sutphin studied pre-medicine at Wake Forest College until being recalled to active duty by the Navy at the outbreak of the Korean Conflict in 1950. After discharge, he obtained his bachelor’s degree with honors at North Carolina State College in 1954. He then worked for the DuPont Company. Dr. Sutphin received his doctorate in dental surgery at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1962, where he was president of his senior class. He practiced dentistry in Mount Airy until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Sutphin is survived by his wife of 74 years, Sue Flinchum Sutphin of the home; two sons, Hugh Edward Sutphin, Jr. and his wife, Nancy Sutphin, of Greensboro and Phillip Mark Sutphin and his wife, Patsy Taylor Sutphin, of Concord; two granddaughters, Dr. Suzanne Taylor Sutphin and her husband, Nathan Ruth, of Columbia, SC, and Katherine Taylor Leonard and her husband, Eric Leonard, of Concord; two great-grandsons, Benson Taylor Leonard and Jackson Taft Ruth; and three great-granddaughters, Rae Taylor Leonard, Cleo Taylor Leonard, and Harper Lynn Ruth. In addition to his parents, Dr. Sutphin was preceded in death by an infant sister. All services have been cancelled due to a family illness. A private inurnment will be held at Oakdale Cemetery at a later date.
